Long-established riverside pub in Greenwich

The Trafalgar Tavern has been running certainly since my youth (for over 30 years) having visited/pass by on many occasions whilst growing up nearby.  The bar area downstairs has progressively receded back over the years to make way for more tables and is now essentially a very large gastro pub for the location and setting that it is compared to a pub. It’s probably a more future proof model to aim for as a sustainable business, but sadly I thought the food could do with an uplift on my visit having been noted as good in the past, it seems to have gone downhill a little, perhaps with the more covers it needs to serve with the same sized kitchen.  Still a picturesque place to visit and a staple of Greenwich situated right next to the Old Naval College.

Greenwich whitebait with paprika mayonnaise and seeded bread was a little dry but otherwise doable.  Beef carpaccio with caper mayonnaise, parmesan and rocket was good and the lobster ravioli with a lobster and salmon mousse, with a sherry, lobster and cream sauce was actually nicely done and good value (£9) for the quantity.

What wasn’t such good value for money was the lobster thermidor with half a lobster for £28 which was tough, unrefined and with a sauce that had split.  One would expect to pay this price or just over at a restaurant that prepares Thermidor well but when it is presented in this way and maintains the price tag, I have an issue with this mentality of charging just because it is lobster – it still needs to be cooked well and this was not making it a ruined experience.

The lamb was fair but nothing to write home about and the sides were probably the more reasonable aspect of the meal.  Ice creams were basic and the tart dessert was not too bad but I would be very surprised if this was done from scratch and was suspiciously out of the packet and with icing sugar dusted on in a clumsy way before being served.

The visit was pleasant but unfortunately represents the category of food I least like – being charged normal – high prices for dishes that simply are not worthy.  I would like the Trafalgar Tavern to up its game considerably as not everyone that goes in is a tourist to be served quickly and moved on.

Charming French brasserie chain affording superb value for money

A wonderful Mother’s Day champagne breakfast and superb value for money at £14 per person for a glass of champagne, orange or apple juice, hot drink and main breakfast meal.  Understandably for the occasion it was packed but even that was the case the staff seemed to be quite happy and were entirely gracious with us throughout the energy of the service which makes such a difference.  The French toast was beautifully light and the salmon and scrambled eggs were very good value.  I enjoyed the frehsly made pan au chocolate and the jams to go with fresh croissant were all good.  I also loved my crepe with bacon, gruyere cheese and eggs but would have much preferred the eggs to be runny (they were mostly hard).  However, the overall effect was lovely French brasserie food in a bustling environment for very good value with very warm service.  Bravo all the staff here on all counts; a very pleasant visit.

As a chain, one can assume that the food will be approximately the same in each venue and this is taken from a visit to the Blackheath branch in SE London.  This was a very pleasant occasion as I was actually celebrating New Year without a hangover for once and having a champagne lunch.  The menu was exceptionally good value (£12 for 3 courses) and the dishes were exactly the comfort dishes that one would wish for (paté and toast, breaded fish strips with taratar sauce and fries and euf cocote – simple and very effective.  It has a slightly snug feel inside and you need to watch your feet for unseen steps here and there but it has a cosy charm which is very pleasant.  The main aspect that needed tightening was the service – the waiting staff looked under duress and getting their attention took a bit of digging which always dampens the overall experience, however in terms of the food options, these were very agreeable, especially for a for what it is (a pleasant restaurant chain) with an accompanying glass of Kir Royale, which was also done well and at a very reasonable price.

RIP - Closed as at 2017. Ex-brasserie located in Blackheath village, serving numerous types of menu options all day in a pleasant setting.  Perfect for brunch upstairs and dinners downstairs.

I have been here many times having grown up in Blackheath and remember it well when it was Chapter II (sister restaurant to Chapter One in Kent) 20 odd years ago.  It actually changed from the restaurant (only) that it was to the all day dining brasserie it is now whilst I was away abroad for 6 months, so when I got back I was surprised as it was pretty much the flagship restaurant in Blackheath.  Obvious care and attention to the brunch experience but ultimately some aspects that could have been better as well.

Many shops and restaurants have changed since, so there is a possibility that there are others I have not been to that are worthy of trying.  However, the stylish look, casual feel, attentive service and array of menu choices do make this venue a very nice option as there is not much to dislike.  I have found the service can be quite stretched to discomfort levels when fully booked and even seen / heard staff being argumentative with each other when the pressure is high which, if removed, would raise its game a lot.  However, I have also found the staff very accommodating and hospitable to guests as much as is possible to requests which is actually a forte of this venue.

There is obvious care in to the smoothies, shakes, hot drinks and general brunch options and I think this says a lot as only places that have pride in their work will go to this attentive level for the small things which I do like here.  The salad and eggs benedict were on form today with perfectly runny yolks but I don’t agree with the top of the eggs being grilled just for decoration as this seriously affects the hollondaise – sprinkles of herbs or seasoning would be what I would go for instead here.

It hasn’t always been this well done on some past occasions however, today was very good.  Aspects that could have been better, I would say the were the chips as, although wonderful, had too much cooking oil within them (and could have had this soaked away more before serving) and I felt the sauce béarnaise could have done with a touch more seasoning (the tarragon was fine but seemed to need a touch more acidity via more punch from the shallot & white wine reduction and salt).  Still, very pleasant brunch and even more cherished for the detox diet I am shortly about to embark on.

Thai restaurant overlooking the Thames a minutes walk from the Greenwich foot tunnel

Getting the Thames Clipper to Masthouse Terrace (with a following 6 minute walk) is by far the nicest way of travelling to this restaurant located imediately opposite Greenwich on the north side of the river.  It is a little gem in the otherwise mixed setting of Island Gardens (Isle of Dogs).  The food is among the nicest Thai food I have had in London with the hoi sin, plum and peanut sauces all being made freshly by the chefs (although the sweet chilli sauce is a modified version of pre-package but still good).  Good location as well, overlooking the river and probably one of the lesser known little finds in East London.

The Red Thai curry with thinly sliced duck was beautifully viscous and will be much more to British tastes compard to how it is authentically done in Thailand (being a lot more watery as a sauce and with a greater punch of spice).  £40 for two people to share on this ocasion meant very good value as it was highly gratifying to eat and both parties were stuffed at the end for the two starters and sharing the selected main with rice.

A must for me to return to sample and a very safe bet for anyone who loves Thai food and does not need to travel too far to get here.  Service was speedy rather than heartfelt.  A good place to find in summary.
