Chinese restaurant within the Grand Hyatt, Tokyo
Staying in Tokyo during a category 9 typhoon and an earthquake at sea not far away, it was a good job we were staying at the Grand Hyatt which is built on stilts, designed to withstand forces, be it from tectonic plate shifting, category 9 winds or a potential tsunami. As these factors seemingly all came together at the same time, the only thought was that if were going to go down, it could not happen without one last Peking duck in hoisin sauce which, thankfully one of the 5 restaurants within the Grand Hyatt Tokyo offers. Aside from bizarrely forgetful or unintuitive waiting staff, the Peking duck was a good effort and nicely glazed along (slightly hard pancakes though) with some comfort appetisers of truffle and shrimp dumplings, wagyu puff pie and a decent custard fritter in the mix. Certainly not cheap at £115 per head with drinks, but this is the curse of 5* hotels and in an emergency, we were happy to forgo this on a potentially last meal ever. Very hospitable chef on our night as well.
