Small chain burger restaurant in London
Burger and Beyond is a small chain of four burger venues in London – a main restaurant in Shoreditch and market stalls in Camden Market, Camden Assembly and a final one in Lakeside shopping centre. The burgers are, as one would expect with a name such as Burger and Beyond, very good with 60% brioche bun and using 30-day aged beef. There are other offerings on the menu (see full review button), some good some not so good. Overall this is a great option if you like meaty burgers and the tots are the far better option than the fries here, but the policy of ensuring no vegetables in the burgers here is the bit I struggle with and prevents it from being my favourite place for burgers in London. A decent option though regardless.
Quail egg scotch eggs are a starter option which I was delighted to see and are served with hot mustard, garlic, chilli and Dijon based mayonnaise. Sadly these were overcooked and the runny yolk ruined by being hard and a great shame as the mince inside had good flavour, but these were simply nowhere near the quail egg scotch eggs found at say Michelin starred The Hind’s Head pub in Bray.
Burgers are offered cooked to order with a choice of medium (as lowest), well done and very well done as the choices. Even though this was said, my first (bacon) burger here came out as medium rare and my visit the next day, trying the cheeseburger, this was medium cooked and pleasant.
The lunchtime offer of single cheeseburger & fries at £10, or any burger with tots at £15 which is good value bearing in mind the tots are £6.50 on their own however, this is actually a very high mark up for tots whereby the truffle mayonnaise will have a 99.9% chance of being the synthetic compound 2,4-dithiapentane, so I can’t see why pre-packed mini potato hashbrowns would be £6.50. In any case, the best way to get value for money is do this combined lunch deal.
Cheeseburger comes with double American cheese, smoky mayonnaise and onion; this was nice but an anticlimax and was overly greasy with no the veg such as simple lettuce or even gherkin. Bacon butter burger comes with double American cheese, crispy pancetta bacon, burnt butter mayonnaise and onion – much the same, this was an enjoyable burger with the pancetta doing its job well, but a huge amount of protein for the bite.
Krispie fried chicken burger is served as Rice Krispie fried chicken, miso maple butter and ranch pickle slaw was actually the burger I think you should come here for. It was the most succulent chicken burger I’ve had and rice Krispie crunchy batter was superb, coated with its miso mayonnaise. The only problem here is that it is absolutely caked in slaw (far too much) and again, gives a gigantic mouthful of oil and fat. It may look like food porn but would be genuinely better for this to be toned down I think.
All in all, this is an interesting burger option to go for but I was saddened it did not get me closer to finding the ultimate in burger options for London.
