Newly unveiled (2024) creative vegan only restaurant from the Great British Menu winner Kirk Howarth
The current form of Plates opened in June 2024 and is now (at time of writing) the UK’s only Michelin starred vegan restaurant, earning its Michelin star in 2025. This meal was had in 2024 and I recall predicting this would very much gain this accolade especially after the exposure of the head chef Kirk Howarth (son of Michelin starred Nigel Howarth who was formerly the chef patron of Northcote) became the champion of champions on his Great British Menu appearance. Ā The tasting menu only was Ā£75 and proved to have a couple of superb moments with particular mention to the laminated bread and raw caramel sauce for the dessert), although you will have to be a die hard fan to go through the months of trying to gain a table, especially now that it has a Michelin star. Ā There is a counter bar to be squeezed in if there is a cancellation. Ā Ultimately, I thought this was extremely high technical skill and would happily eat this food every day on health benefits, but only if it were a little easier to gain entry which is the only off-putting thing sadly. Ā Prepare yourself for the long haul on getting a table.
