New pub venture featuring ex-Mandarin Oriental Hotel head chef Ashley Palmer-Watts
The Devonshire pub in Soho has gained much attention since the head chef of 2 Michelin starred Dinner by Heston (at the Mandarin Oriental hotel in Knightsbridge) took over as head chef in a new venture. The chef is Ashley Palmer-Watts who was formerly of 3 Michelin starred The Fat Duck prior to Dinner by Heston. This visit of mine was purely for the bar snacks, so to be perfectly clear, this review is not of the restaurant of The Devonshire. Sadly, based on these bar snacks that I gather are from the same kitchen as the restaurant I am not inclined to rush to the restaurant. The mini sausages were fine but I was expecting a little more than Colemans English mustard as a dip; the chips were not at the level of triple cooked chips at numerous places and the Scotch egg filling was surprisingly bland. To top it off, the Bloody Marys were genuinely watery and lacking in flavour which should have been the one part that the bar / pub excelled at. So sadly this was disappointing, but I will get round to dining at The Devonshire restaurant… at some point.
