L’Enclume (Cumbria)

11th August 2012 by Richard Bagnold Leave a Comment

Dazzling dishes from Simon Rogan at his flagship and 2 Michelin starred restaurant resting on all local ingredients - wonderful invention of design and some pleasing flavours as well. Promoted to 3 Michelin stars in 2022 Guide.

Now as a 2 Michelin starred venue for this visit, the expectation was even greater.  This was returned in the guise of a spectacular meal of an even greater number of courses.  The truth be known however, I actually preferred the flavour of the dishes on my visit when it was a one star and now that it has gained two Michelin stars, my second visit showed an almost marathon of a tasting menu with simply superb inventiveness (particular highlight being the crystallised candy pops that accompanied the main meat course) but glad to have experienced it rather than an insatiable desire to get back there soon.

Simon Rogan’s dishes are utterly fresh and stylish without being too over the top and the sourcing of all local ingredients from the immediate lands give his cooking a very personal touch.  The food will wow almost any diner and it should definitely be on every foodie’s to do list.  Perfect for a nice lunch and a special occasion, but with the length of the menus and price tags associated, it’s difficult to view as a place to just drop in – diners should be under no illusion that booking as well as planning the stomach and timetable well in advance is required for a visit here.

Without a shadow of doubt an absolute gem within the UK.  The unassuming and cosy, understated warmth of the restaurant has simple style and elegance working well in all seasons (conservatory dining available in the Summer) and there is no doubt the food is on an upper level.  This was a special meal for all sorts of reasons but additionally in terms of the food.  The fact that you are not presented with a menu adds to the surprise – all you have to do is say how many courses you are going to go for from the selection of 5, 7 or 9 and any allergies – Mr Rogan’s team will do the rest!  And what a show at that, with real passion and care gone in to the slection of all of the local ingredients which are as fresh as they come.  Throw in extremely concise skill and you have undeniably good cooking and well worth the visit if you are happy with the journey required.

About Me

meMy hobby-turned-passion began to evolve during my assignments to London where I was fortunate enough to be able to explore all the Michelin starred restaurants in my spare time and as a result, I gradually built up a catalogue of all these venues.
