Meadowsweet (Holt)

1st April 2023 by Richard Bagnold Leave a Comment

Michelin starred restaurant from chef Greg Anderson set in Holt, Norfolk

Meadowsweet is the first solo venture from chef Greg Anderson, formerly at the helm of long-standing Michelin starred Morston Hall (by Galton Blackiston) also based in Norfolk. Opened in June 2021, the restaurant is set within a Georgian building with elements dating to the Tudor period and offers rooms as well.  The full tasting menu is £130 per person and on select days the lunch menu is £75 per person.  I greatly enjoyed this menu as the headline and was great to see the head chef deliver his dishes personally to the restaurant for as many as possible to explain each dish.  I would thoroughly recommend this restaurant and is seemingly a very appropriate addition for the locality it serves.

The dining experience at this restaurant was a fantastic journey through a range of beautifully executed dishes. The meal began with thin slices of Serrano ham, followed by the rich flavors of baron Higod and beetroot. The chicken liver and red cabbage canapé  was also notable, with the tartness of the cabbage complementing the richness of the liver.

My guests reported the Brancaster oyster with jalapeño and citrus were refreshing and zesty start to the next course, which featured a delicious duck steamed bun accompanied by a flavourful mushroom ketchup. Henry’s lobster was cooked to perfection and served with an indulgent butter sauce.

The halibut with Vin Jaune was light and delicate, served with lovely morel mushrooms.  The dry-aged Norfolk lamb was cooked to perfection and served with a lovely salsa verde. In addition these very well done main plates was a sharing pot of slow-cooked lamb with potato slices and was a genuine knock out of a dish, all enjoyed as a sharing bowl effectively.

The Yorkshire rhubarb soufflé was a sweet and splendid end to a great meal. What felt like a conveyer belt of mini desserts and petit fours that were as generous as the canapes were lovely to try.  This actually reminded me of the level detail and quantity of options provided at 3 Michelin starred The French Laundry (see dessert photos in the link of my review). Overall, this restaurant provides a dining experience that is both creative and delicious, with dishes that are beautifully presented and packed with flavor. The building is historic with low, cottage ceilings (mind your head as a friendly warning) and Holt has gained a strong neighbour restaurant.

About Me

meMy hobby-turned-passion began to evolve during my assignments to London where I was fortunate enough to be able to explore all the Michelin starred restaurants in my spare time and as a result, I gradually built up a catalogue of all these venues.
