Coverted pub now upscaled restaurant in Chelsea serving well done, classic British cuisine
No Fifty Cheyne is becoming something of an institution, based in Chelsea adjacent to Albert Bridge and has been lauded for their Sunday Roasts via several sources. This may be in part that meats and grills is the speciality of the house (one of the sides being seared foie gras for example) although there is a very reasonable set menu called ‘taste of fifty’ served at lunch and dinner on Mon – Sat with the appealing price point of £25 for two courses or £29 for three courses. I was also particularly pleased with the wine markup prices with a glass of Ruinart Brut for £17 when you can easily find this for upwards of £30 in various places I can think of in Mayfair. Another bonus of this venue is its Tuesday evening offer on the Lucury Restaurant Guide which is 50% off the price of the whole Grill menu (which includes the most expensive meats). This is a charming venue offering British classics.
The biggest success for the table of this visit was probably the large red prawns that had very good flavour particularly the juices from the head but I thought the Dover Sole was wonderful being offered to be served off the bone with a superb white cream and herb sauce. The chateaubriand had good flavour and was served with a very well executed sauce béarnaise sauce although I was actually very impressed with the fillet steak. The lamb had good flavour but was a little tough and as much as I loved the sides, it was a shame that the seared foie gras side was basically cold. I think the only thing to do with this is place on top of whichever meat is chosen to keep this warm and combine with the choice of meat. The cheesecake was surprisingly good as well (not too dense or fluffy at the same time).
I think this is a delightful venue and being a luxury restaurant guide member, I will have no hesitation in going back for the Dover Sole on a Tuesday evening and I am interested to try the other meat dishes. Thoroughly recommended although the service charge at 19% (which is frankly unheard of for the UK) and although the team were accommodating, I think it is a reminder for all to check their bills for ‘optional service charges’ and judge accordingly. You have been forewarned, but I do recommend this venue so there is no confusion.

My hobby-turned-passion began to evolve during my assignments to London where I was fortunate enough to be able to explore all the Michelin starred restaurants in my spare time and as a result, I gradually built up a catalogue of all these venues.
